Our Mission
The Matagorda Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and displaying the township’s history for the people who love this community, whether they are permanent residents or visitors.
We desire to collect, or acquire, on loan or be gifted, historical artifacts from this area. We shall present to the public the history of this small but historically important township, which played a very important part in helping Texas gain its independence from Mexico in 1836.
To support by “in kind” or by monetary donations other nonprofit organizations in the township to include, but not limited to, Matagorda Volunteer Fire Department, local Churches in the township with community outreach programs for children and Matagorda Schools.
To support Matagorda School with Historical field trips to the museum and Heritage Park and to support the teachers with stipends to offset the costs of supplies needed by the students.
To support the Matagorda Cemetery and other historical locations within the township.
To preserve the history of Matagorda for generations to follow not only for the members of this organization, but for the township, Matagorda County, the State of Texas and visitors from places near and far.
